Budapest Travel Guide: Top Things to Do and See

JustRent TeamMarch 23, 2026

Budapest is one of Europe's most spectacular capitals. Straddling the Danube between the hilly Buda side and the flat Pest side, the city offers a remarkable combination of grand imperial architecture, Ottoman heritage, vibrant nightlife, world-class thermal baths and an emerging food scene that punches well above its weight internationally. This guide covers the essential experiences for first-time visitors – and why having a rental car from JustRent makes exploring it all significantly easier.

Buda vs Pest: Understanding the City

Budapest was formed in 1873 by the administrative union of three towns: Buda, Óbuda and Pest. The two banks of the Danube have very different characters and understanding them helps you plan your time.

Buda is hilly, green and historic. The Castle District sits on a dramatic plateau above the river, housing the Royal Palace, Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion. The residential hills of Buda are quiet, leafy and home to some of the city's most exclusive properties. Getting around Buda by public transport requires patience; a rental car makes it far more practical.

Pest is flat, dense and energetic. The grand boulevards of the Inner City, the Jewish Quarter, the Great Market Hall, the Opera House and the majority of the city's best restaurants and bars are all on the Pest side. Pest is walkable in the centre but a car is invaluable for reaching outlying areas.

Essential Attractions in Budapest

Buda Castle District

UNESCO-listed and deservedly so. The Castle District encompasses the Royal Palace (now home to the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum), the beautifully restored Matthias Church and the theatrical Fisherman's Bastion with its seven towers and extraordinary panoramic views over the Danube and Pest. The area is best visited in the early morning before the tour groups arrive.

The Hungarian Parliament Building

One of the largest parliament buildings in the world, and arguably the most beautiful. The neo-Gothic masterpiece sits directly on the Danube embankment on the Pest side. Guided tours of the interior are available daily and include the Hungarian Crown Jewels. Book tickets in advance online, especially in summer.

Thermal Baths

Budapest sits atop one of the world's richest thermal spring networks, with over 120 natural springs producing warm mineral water. The thermal bathing culture is central to daily life in the city. The most famous baths include:

  • Széchenyi Baths: The largest medicinal bath in Europe, located in City Park. The iconic yellow neo-baroque building is one of Budapest's most photographed landmarks. Open year-round.
  • Gellért Baths: Art Nouveau masterpiece on the Buda side. Attached to the historic Gellért Hotel. The indoor main pool with its vaulted ceiling and mosaic tiles is extraordinary.
  • Rudas Baths: The most authentically Ottoman of Budapest's baths, with a 16th-century domed pool at its heart. Night bathing sessions on weekends are a uniquely Budapest experience.

The Ruin Bars of the Jewish Quarter

Budapest's most distinctive contribution to global nightlife culture: bars built inside the ruined courtyards and derelict buildings of the formerly neglected Jewish Quarter in District VII. Szimpla Kert, the original ruin bar, opened in 2002 and triggered a cultural movement. Today the area has dozens of atmospheric venues ranging from intimate wine bars to multi-room nightclubs. The neighbourhood is best explored on foot in the evening.

The Great Market Hall (Nagyvásárcsarnok)

Budapest's main covered market, built in 1897, is a cathedral of commerce spread over three levels. The ground floor is the best place in the city to buy Hungarian food products – paprika in every variety, Pick salami, lángos, fresh produce and traditional pastries. The upper gallery is primarily aimed at tourists and is best navigated with some local knowledge.

City Park (Városliget) and Heroes' Square

The grand Millennium Monument at Heroes' Square marks the entrance to City Park – Budapest's main urban park and home to the Széchenyi Baths, the Vajdahunyad Castle, the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden, and the Kunsthalle contemporary art museum. A complete renovation of the park under the Liget Budapest Project has added world-class new cultural institutions in recent years.

Neighbourhoods Worth Exploring

District V (Belváros-Lipótváros): The historic core of Pest. Government buildings, the Parliament, Vörösmarty Square and the famous Gerbeaud café.

District VI (Terézváros): The grand ring boulevard, Andrássy Avenue (Budapest's Champs-Élysées), the Opera House and the House of Terror museum.

District VII (Erzsébetváros): The Jewish Quarter, the Great Synagogue (largest in Europe), the ruin bars and some of the best street food in the city.

District IX (Ferencváros): Budapest's most rapidly changing neighbourhood. The Bálna cultural centre, the National Theatre, and a growing collection of excellent restaurants and coffee shops.

Budapest Food and Coffee Culture

Hungarian cuisine is hearty, paprika-forward and deeply satisfying. The essentials: gulyás (goulash soup), pörkölt (slow-cooked meat stew), halászlé (fisherman's soup), töltött káposzta (stuffed cabbage), and lángos (fried dough with sour cream and cheese). For dessert: kürtőskalács (chimney cake), rétes (strudel) and Dobos cake.

Budapest's coffee culture is exceptional. The city has several grand historic coffee houses – Gerbeaud, New York Café, Central Café – and a thriving third-wave specialty coffee scene with some of the best roasters in Central Europe.

Getting Around Budapest: Why a Rental Car Helps
