Hungary Wine Country: A Road Trip Guide from Budapest

JustRent TeamMarch 23, 2026

Hungary is one of Europe's most fascinating and underappreciated wine countries. With 22 officially recognised wine regions, a winemaking history stretching back over a thousand years, and a rapidly evolving generation of ambitious young producers, Hungarian wine deserves far more international attention than it currently receives. The best way to explore it? A rental car from JustRent and an open itinerary. Here's your complete road trip guide to Hungary's wine country.

Why Hungarian Wine is Worth the Journey

Hungarian wine is having a genuine renaissance. A new generation of winemakers trained in France, Italy and Spain has returned to Hungary and applied international techniques to Hungary's unique indigenous grape varieties. The result is a collection of wines that are at once distinctly Hungarian and internationally competitive in quality.

Key indigenous varieties to know: Furmint (the great white of Tokaj, capable of extraordinary complexity), Hárslevelű (aromatic, often blended with Furmint in Tokaj), Kékfrankos (the workhorse red, related to Austria's Blaufränkisch), and Kadarka (the historic red of the Great Plain, making a comeback in quality-focused hands).

Tokaj-Hegyalja: Hungary's Most Famous Wine Region

Distance from Budapest: 2h 30min

Tokaj is Hungary's most internationally recognised wine region and one of the world's great wine destinations. The region produces the legendary Tokaji Aszú, a botrytised sweet wine that was the first wine in the world to be systematically classified by quality (in 1730, nearly a century before Bordeaux). Louis XIV reportedly called it "the wine of kings, the king of wines." UNESCO recognised the Tokaj wine landscape as a World Heritage Site in 2002.

Beyond Aszú, Tokaj now produces a remarkable range of dry Furmint wines – mineral, saline, long-lived – that are increasingly celebrated internationally. The key producers to visit include Erzsébet Pince, Kővágó, Patricius, István Szepsy and the historic Royal Tokaj estate.

The region is best explored over two days: the first day visiting cellars and vineyards in the village of Tokaj itself, the second exploring Mád, Tarcal and Tállya. A rental car is the only practical way to move between these scattered villages.

Eger: The Valley of Beautiful Women and Egri Bikavér

Distance from Budapest: 1h 30min

Eger's wine reputation rests primarily on Egri Bikavér (Bull's Blood of Eger), a powerful red blend whose dramatic name reflects a legend from the 1552 siege of Eger Castle. The wine fell out of fashion during the communist era of mass production, but a new generation of producers has restored its credibility.

The Szépasszony-völgy (Valley of Beautiful Women) on the edge of Eger is a unique wine tourism experience: dozens of small family cellars carved into the volcanic hillside, each with a few tables outside and their own range of wines available by the glass or jug. On a warm afternoon, this is one of Hungary's great pleasures. Drive there, taste responsibly, and let your designated driver handle the return journey.

Villány: Hungary's Red Wine Capital

Distance from Budapest: 3 hours

Villány, in the far south of Hungary near the Croatian border, produces what many consider Hungary's finest and most internationally styled red wines. The climate here – warmer and sunnier than anywhere else in Hungary – produces bold, full-bodied Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon wines that compete directly with Bordeaux and Tuscany.

The village of Villány itself is a charming wine destination: a single main street lined with prestige wineries including Bock, Gere, Malatinszky and Vylyan. Most have restaurant facilities and accommodation. An overnight stay is strongly recommended for a proper exploration – and designating one driver for the day's cellar visits is the responsible approach.

Balaton Uplands and Badacsony: Volcanic Whites

Distance from Budapest: 1h 30min

The northern shore of Lake Balaton is formed by the remains of ancient volcanoes, and the basalt soils produce some of Hungary's most distinctive white wines. The Badacsony wine region, centred on a flat-topped basalt hill rising dramatically from the lake, specialises in Olaszrizling (Welschriesling), Szürkebarát (Pinot Gris) and Kéknyelű, a rare indigenous variety found almost nowhere else in the world.

The combination of wine tasting, volcanic landscape and lakeside scenery makes the Badacsony a perfect day trip destination from Budapest. Park at the base of the hill and walk up through the vineyards to the summit for panoramic views over Balaton.

Planning Your Hungary Wine Road Trip: Practical Tips

  • Always designate a driver: Hungarian wine tasting is generous and the roads between wineries are rural. Designate a non-drinking driver or use tasting portions rather than full pours.
  • Book cellar visits in advance: Many of Hungary's best family wineries require advance appointments, particularly during the harvest season (September–October) when they're busiest.
  • Travel in autumn for harvest: September and October are the best months to visit Hungarian wine country. The vendange is in full swing, many estates host harvest events, and the landscapes are stunning.
  • Bring an insulated cool bag: You'll inevitably buy bottles to take home. A cool bag in the boot of your JustRent vehicle keeps them at the right temperature during the drive back.
  • Choose a comfortable vehicle: Long days of driving between wine regions are significantly more enjoyable in a premium sedan or SUV. Consider upgrading your rental category for a multi-day wine road trip.
