Driving in Hungary: Road Rules, Speed Limits & Essential Tips

JustRent TeamMarch 23, 2026

Hungary has a well-developed road network, modern motorways and relatively straightforward traffic rules – but there are several important legal requirements and local quirks that every visitor should know before getting behind the wheel. This guide covers everything you need to drive confidently in Hungary with a JustRent rental car.

Speed Limits in Hungary

Hungary's speed limits are strictly enforced, with automated speed cameras operating on most major roads and motorways. The limits are as follows:

  • Built-up areas (városban): 50 km/h – this applies to all areas where the built-up area sign is displayed, regardless of road width.
  • Outside built-up areas (lakott területen kívül): 90 km/h on standard roads.
  • Dual carriageways (kétszámjegyű főút): 110 km/h.
  • Motorways (autópálya / autóút): 130 km/h.

Speed camera locations are not always signposted. Drive within the limits at all times. Fines issued to foreign-registered vehicles are enforced through international agreements, so there is no avoiding them.

The Hungarian Motorway Vignette (Matrica)

To use any Hungarian motorway or motorway-standard road (marked M1, M0, M5, M6, M7 etc.), you must purchase a digital motorway vignette called a matrica. Unlike some countries, Hungary's vignette system is entirely digital – there is no physical sticker. Instead, your vehicle's licence plate is registered in the system.

You can purchase a matrica online at motorway-vignette.hu, at petrol stations across Hungary, or through the e-matrica app. Options include a 10-day, monthly or annual vignette. If you're renting from JustRent, we can arrange the vignette purchase for you at the time of booking.

Important: Driving on a motorway without a valid vignette results in an automatic fine issued by roadside cameras. There is no grace period and no way to pay retroactively.

Zero Tolerance Alcohol Policy

Hungary enforces a zero blood alcohol limit for all drivers. This is not 0.05% as in many Western European countries – it is genuinely zero. Even a single beer or glass of wine can put you over the limit. Roadside breath tests are routine, particularly on weekends and near tourist areas. The penalties for drink-driving in Hungary are severe and include immediate licence confiscation, heavy fines and potential criminal charges. Do not drink and drive under any circumstances.

Headlights On at All Times

Outside built-up areas, Hungarian law requires dipped headlights to be used at all times, regardless of weather or visibility conditions. This applies in daylight as well as at night. All JustRent vehicles are equipped with automatic daytime running lights, but it's worth confirming your headlights are active when leaving urban areas.

Seatbelts and Child Safety

Seatbelts are compulsory for all passengers in all seats. Children under 150cm in height must use an appropriate child restraint system. JustRent provides properly certified and fitted child seats upon request – simply add one when configuring your booking. Driving without a child seat when one is required results in an on-the-spot fine.

Mobile Phones

Using a handheld mobile phone while driving is illegal in Hungary and carries an on-the-spot fine. Hands-free systems are permitted. All JustRent vehicles support Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calls and navigation.

What to Carry in the Vehicle

Hungarian law requires all vehicles to carry the following equipment:

  • Warning triangle (provided in all JustRent vehicles)
  • High-visibility safety vest (provided in all JustRent vehicles)
  • First aid kit (provided in all JustRent vehicles)
  • Fire extinguisher (not legally required but recommended)

You should also carry your driving licence, passport or ID, the vehicle registration document, and your rental agreement at all times.

Parking in Budapest

Budapest operates a colour-coded paid parking zone system in the city centre and inner districts. Parking fees and hours of operation vary by zone:

  • Red zone (central): Highest rates, typically Districts V and VI.
  • Blue zone: Mid-range rates, inner residential districts.
  • Green zone: Lower rates, outer residential areas.

Payment is made at parking meters using coins, bank cards or the Parkl app, which allows cashless payment from your phone. Many parking zones operate Monday to Friday until 18:00 or 20:00, with free parking at weekends in some areas – but always check the signs.

For extended stays or overnight parking, Budapest has a good network of underground and multi-storey car parks, particularly in Districts V, VI and VII. These are the safest and most convenient option in the city centre.

Hungarian Road Signs

Hungarian road signs follow the standard European convention and are broadly intuitive for drivers from EU countries. Key signs to know:

  • STOP – Full stop required, as everywhere
  • Behajtani tilos – No entry
  • Egyirányú forgalom – One-way traffic
  • Autópálya – Motorway (vignette required)
  • Lakott terület – Built-up area begins (50 km/h limit)

Winter Driving in Hungary

Hungarian winters can be harsh, particularly in the north and east of the country. From November to March, roads can be icy, especially at night and in rural areas. All JustRent vehicles are fitted with winter tyres during the winter season as standard, giving you proper grip in cold and wet conditions. If you're planning a winter road trip to the mountains or the Northern Uplands, consider choosing an SUV with all-wheel drive for added confidence.

Emergency Numbers

  • General emergency: 112 (works from any phone, including without a SIM)
  • Police: 107
  • Ambulance: 104
  • Fire service: 105
  • Hungarian Automobile Club (Magyar Autóklub): 188
